The Psychiatric Emergency Nurse provides direct care and consultation for psychiatric patients to ensure that psychiatric needs of the patient and the patient’s family are given clear priority in relation to other competing interests. The PEN performs intake assessments, offers crisis intervention, and provides input into the care plans of psychiatric patients who are being assessed for possible admission to an in-patient psychiatric unit, other psychiatric facility or discharge.
